What is Urban Axe Throwing?

The sport of axe throwing has a long history, (back to the 3rd Century at least) and today there are axe throwing leagues, competitions and outdoor ranges around the world.

More recently, bringing axe throwing indoors has become popular, and Eat Sleep Axe provides that unique experience in Cheltenham, in our suitably urban venue. Enjoy a welcoming atmosphere with great music, awesome artwork and refreshments available.

We have three lanes with end-grain boards for a better stick and offer a variety of good quality throwing axes, suitable for beginners, and for more experienced players.

Games are projected onto the targets for variety, both competitive and casual, and we have monthly leaderboards for our competition targets.

Axe throwing is great fun and most people usually master it within the session, so come along and try it out for yourself!

Our venue

We are based in the heart of Cheltenham (Winchcombe Street), just a few minutes walk from the High Street. We are on the second floor of Escape Rooms Cheltenham which also houses Splatter Room Cheltenham, so there’s plenty more to do here than just axe throwing!

Our venue is indoors so no chance of getting caught in the rain, and is fully air-conditioned/heated so you can trust whatever the weather you’ll have comfortable experience.

We have three target lanes that can be booked individually or all together for groups of 2 up to 21 people. Find out more here.

The session

Each session runs for 60 mins as standard, larger groups can book for 90 mins whole venue hire, or individual groups can add more time during the session if they’re having too much fun!

The session begins with a short health and safety briefing followed by an introduction to throwing and a demonsration from one of our dedicated coaches. All groups must listen to the health and safety, but if you’ve thrown before you can skip the demo part!

You’ll get the choice of 5 different axes ranging in size and weight, and we offer a warm up period to try them all out, get used to the technique, and find your favourite.

After that you’re free to compete and play which ever of our 11 games you like. Our targets have projected games, so you can easily change what’s on the board to keep the session fun and engaging.

Our coaches will be on hand throughout the session for any help and advice and to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

Meet the axes

Not everyone has the same strength or throwing style, so it’s important to choose the right tool for the job. That’s why we offer a variety of axes in different sizes, weights and styles, so everyone can find what works best for themselves!

Steel Tomahawk

The smallest of the group, but not to be underestimated. This Smith and Wesson axe is super lightweight, bladed all the way round which gives more opportunities for sticking, and is overall just super fun to throw!

Wood Chopper

Your standard axe that you’ll find in any hardware store, it’s not made for throwing, but you can! Lightweight, easy to throw with a curved handle for grip support. This is most people’s choice for their starting axe.

Throwing Hatchet

Designed for the sport of axe throwing. Perfectly weighted, smooth straight handle, just an all round good axe for getting a good stick into the target!

‘Killshot’

Competition Thrower

Regulation World Axe Throwing League axe, named after the little blue dots on a standard competition target. Made with a fibre glass handle and a heavy blade, this axe gives a really satisfying ‘thud’ when it sticks, perfect for strong or experienced throwers.

Martial Arts Hatchet

The biggest of the bunch, this axe packs a punch. Very similar in style to our throwing hatchet, but with a good few extra inches on the handle! Particularly satisfying to use in a game of zombie slaying.

Add 3 Mjilnors, 2 forged steel throwers or a tactical shovel to your session for even more fun!
